Alex Gamboa was born and raised in Reno, NV and found his love for nature in the waters, trees, and rocks of the majestic Lake Tahoe basin. In addition to enjoying the 300+ sunny days in northern Nevada, Alex was a sports enthusiast. Basketball was his original love and passion growing up; his goal as a youth was to play in the National Basketball Association. Fortunately, Alex was as dedicated to academics as basketball. Because of his success in classrooms and on the court, he was recruited by and accepted to play basketball at Yale University.
Alex excelled at Yale. As a freshman, he helped lead the team to their first Ivy League Championship in over 50 years and their first post-season victory ever, against Rutgers University during the National Invitation Tournament. Alex was the starting point guard for the basketball team all four years, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, and served as Team Captain during his senior year.
Yale University was also the place where Alex discovered the new passion that would guide his life: giving back to the community and making the world a better place. Participating in a mentoring program for local Hispanic male youths changed his life, and Alex befriended three other Yale students who were also committed to making the world a better place. Together, they embarked upon writing business plans for a real estate company with social missions, and worked to help build a house in Lake Tahoe.
Since graduating from Yale with a degree in Economics, Alex has worked for several real estate companies in New York and Nevada, and has experience in real estate development, property management, commercial and residential brokerage, and project management. Upon moving back to Reno in 2008, Alex did a variety of jobs from tutoring struggling elementary school students in academic subjects, and providing basketball lessons. Alex also taught a sustainability class for a year at a Rainshadow Community Charter High School. While teaching and working in Reno, Alex received his real estate license and began working at the largest residential brokerage in Reno. Through his independence and success in the real estate business, Alex was able to start dedicating more time to Envirolution™.
Over the course of the next year, Alex worked to balance his real estate work, which paid the bills, with his passion to green his community through Envirolution™. Alex developed relationships, forged partnerships, and secured an AmeriCorps VISTA position for someone to assist him with Envirolution™. At this juncture in August of 2009, Envirolution™ really began to gain momentum.
In 2010, because Envirolution™ had stabilized financially, Alex realized his dream of working full-time for the organization. Real estate became his side job and Envirolution™ moved into the day-to-day, and Alex couldn’t have been happier. A year later, Alex still works full-time at Envirolution™ and the organization has grown tremendously. His east coast partner and fellow Yale alumnus, Antuan, continues to grow the operations in New York. Alex loves his job and looks forward to continuing to build a green economy and empowering the next generation of sustainability leaders.
Outside of Envirolution™, Alex remains active in the community. He is on the Board of Directors for the Sierra Kids Foundation, on the Advisory Board for the Great Basin Fo-od Coop, a member of the Washoe County Regional Jobs Team, and a member of the Nevada Energy Efficiency Strike Force Team.
Family and friends are the core of Alex’s life. He enjoys spending time with his wife, his dog, his sisters, his mom, and all of his great friends!
