Mel Zeldin was recently appointed as Administrative Director for Envirolution, assuming responsibility for the administrative functions of the Corporation.
Mel previously retired in February 2011 after a 40-year career in the environmental field. During the last five years of his career, he served as Executive Director of the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association, a California non-profit corporation whose members included the heads of all 35 local air pollution control and air quality management districts in California.
As their Executive Director, he served at the will of a 14-member Board of Directors and was responsible for all the functions of the organization, including finance; budgeting; grant procurement; grant administration; personnel hiring and evaluation; staff supervision and assignments; meeting and event organization; internal and external communications; interactions with state and federal agencies; testifying at public hearings, public workshops, and legislative committees; interactions with business and community groups; public outreach; and overseeing of web design and content.
Mel has also been an independent consultant for 10 years, operating his own environmental consulting business, and supporting a variety of clients, mostly public agencies, including the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. He has also served five years as a member of the Washoe County Air Pollution Control Hearing Board, having been appointed by the County Board of Health Commissioners.
In the late 1990’s, Mel served on the executive staff of the South Coast Air Quality Management District – the nation’s largest local/regional air management agency. He was responsible for a staff of over 110, and an annual budget of almost $15 million.
At the end of his career, he was the recipient of resolutions and awards from the California Senate; the California Air Resources Board, the City of Los Angeles, the County of Riverside (CA), the County of San Bernardino (CA), and the National Association of Clean Air Agencies. He also received the Air and Waste Management Association’s prestigious S. Smith Griswold Award.
Now living locally in Spanish Springs with his wife, Jackie, Mel is delighted to be serving in a helpful capacity with Envirolution. He originally became involved with Envirolution as a volunteer through the Retired Senior and Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Reno.
Mel’s hobbies include glass engraving, wood pyrography, and card collecting. He is an avid poker player.
