Envirolution Programs - Project Recharge
Project Recharge
Project ReCharge™ (PRC) is a STEM based (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) service-learning program that educates high school students about energy efficiency while empowering them to take actions that reduce their environmental impact and save money at school and at home. STEM prepares students to be critical thinkers, collaborators and communicators, and better prepares them for industries of the future. With help from Envirolution™, and community facility managers and energy professionals, students learn about energy conservation measures and processes by conducting an energy audit of their school. They collect valuable information on the school’s energy use and analyze the information while developing a final report of cost-saving recommendations.
Project ReCharge™ has been, and can be, implemented through a variety of strategies. Envirolution’s™ PRC™ curriculum has been delivered to students through such single subject classes as science or electives, and through interdisciplinary projects that merge English, science, and mathematics. For teachers, the PRC™ program is a professional development opportunity; Envirolution™ administers workshops to help teachers understand and implement the PRC™ curriculum in their classrooms.
Students, teachers, families and homes, community leaders, and school facilities benefit from Project ReCharge™. Students learn valuable research, collaboration, and communication skills while also developing foundations in energy and building science, cost-benefit analysis, logic, and hands-on problem solving. Teachers are able to diversify their teaching experience and practices, and learn to facilitate students’ hands-on learning. Families, too, benefit from what their children bring home from school—many PRC™ students have described how their PRC™ curriculum projects helped them to save money at home by changing the family’s energy use habits and by replacing inefficient appliances and lighting with more efficient models. Community leaders are invited to visit PRC’s™ participating schools to share their expertise and guidance with students—thereby creating a network within the community and across different strata of society. Project ReCharge™ also provides an array of benefits to participating schools in the form of teacher professionalization, a comprehensive student-lead energy audit of the school, invaluable retrofits for the school facilities, and an overall increase in personal investment in the school from teachers and students.
Through PRC™, Envirolution™ is building community, helping to relieve some of the strain on the environment from energy consumption, preparing students for bright futures, and improving school facilities, which are essential for the education of the next generation of leaders.
