Skye Telka
Sustainable Schools Coordinator
"By using education to enlighten and not to frighten, I hope to help set in motion a massive and much needed shift in global consciousness."

Skye is the daughter of a mechanical engineer and a horticulturist turned teacher, so creating and sustaining are in her blood. She grew up in Reno, where she spent most of her early years coloring under the table during Washoe-Storey Conservation District board meetings or attending Cooperative Extension’s weekend weed pulls. Like most people who grew up in Reno, she left town as soon as she graduated high school, trading the High Sierras for the Puget Sound. She attended The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington where she studied cultural anthropology, but spent plenty of time on the campus’ extensive organic farm or roaming the rainforest identifying edible mushrooms. She spent the last two years living in the Bay Area working with low-income communities to establish school and community gardens and teaching gardening and nutrition education. Brought back to the area by chance, she is awed by all the progressive changes she sees and is excited to get to know Reno all over again. Skye is a self-proclaimed modern day homesteader, an avid fermenter, and an advocate of all things local.
