Dr. Kuhns began developing instrumentation and algorithms to provide building managers with detailed utility information in 2006 while on a sabbatical at the Desert Research Institute. In 2007, Dr. Kuhns formed what is now Load IQ to commercialize novel load disaggregation software and hardware. The algorithms used for LoadIQ’s Enable EI platform are based on mathematical models used for air pollution source attribution.
His company’s technology is currently being showcased as part of Project ReCharge, made possible by a $1.2M NSF ITEST grant where middle and high school students are using energy dashboards to develop energy savings measures for their schools.
He is the inventor on two issued and three pending patents for his innovations in load disaggregation. As a Research Professor at Desert Research Institute, Dr. Kuhns has been a principal investigator and an active member on more than 25 research studies in the field of environmental chemistry. He has published more than 40 papers as author or coauthor in peer reviewed journals.
