Thursday, February 24th – Event in Partnership with UNR

On Thursday, February 24th we welcomed 42 students from Carson City School District to the University of Nevada Reno Campus where we partnered with the College of Engineering and students from the UNR Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.  Together we led these future leaders in three different engineering-related activities focused on chemical, mechanical, and civil engineering.  They worked in teams to work through the engineering design process to create cars, build bridges explore chemical properties of metal. In addition to the hands-on engineering design activities, students were exposed to cutting-edge technology housed in the University’s main library. Students received an exclusive tour and demonstration of the Mathewson Automated Retrieval System (MARS) which houses more than 800,00 items. MARS is a three-story tall storage space located behind-the-scenes inside of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center and its state-of-the-art technology keeps materials safe from humidity, temperature fluctuations, dust and other toxic materials. During the demonstration, students were able to watch the robotic arm retrieve materials at speeds of 22 miles per hour while traversing the aisles. This library also houses the @One Digital Media & Technology Center which includes an exclusive Virtual Reality (VR) room. Students were able to immersive themselves in new VR technology while learning about how VR is used in computer science and engineering and other STEM disciplines.  President Sandoval closed out the event by encouraging the students to continue pursuing their dreams.

“The best part was when we did the activities and we learned from our mistakes to improve our creations” said one student from Carson Middle School.”

We were also honored to have 15 engineers and professionals attend throughout the day from 8 businesses. They shared their career path with the students and engaged in the hands-on activities, allowing the students to envision a career in engineering.

Saturday, February 26th – Event in Partnership with Tesla

2022 marked our 5th year of partnership with Tesla on this incredible event!  We welcomed over 1,400 students from across 500 schools and 38 States, with even a few from Canada and Mexico!  Participants received one-of-a-kind virtual tours of the Fremont, Nevada, and Buffalo Gigafactories while hearing inspiring messages from Women at Tesla.  500 students received materials to participate in creating a simple motor, becoming some of the youngest electrical engineering interns.

If you participated in the event, please complete the Post survey for just the virtual event & Post survey for the virtual event and hands-on activity

FIRST Nevada Mission: To inspire young people to become science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.   FIRST Overview: FIRST is an acronym: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It’s a non-profit workforce development program that challenges Pre K-12th grade students to work as a team to design, build and program a robot. This friendly competition gets students excited about careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math by providing them with hands-on applications of what is being taught in the classroom.  To learn more about FIRST Nevada programs, visit www.FIRSTNevada.org and for funding opportunities to start a new team, use this link.
