Envirolution staff and volunteers have been busy t Envirolution staff and volunteers have been busy the past two days installing new LED lights at Dayton Intermediate School. This project was part of their 7th grade Project ReCharge student proposal and will save the school almost $9000 in energy costs yearly! On Saturday, November 7th, Envirolution hosted a p On Saturday, November 7th, Envirolution hosted a park cleanup at Pickett Park. We had 15 people turn out to help us clean up the park, including some employees from Tesla and some members of the local service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. We collected 36 pounds worth of trash and filled two large jars with cigarette butts. Did you know that around 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide each year? And only 10% of cigarette butts are disposed of properly. Our hope is that by documenting the amount of cigarette butts we collect at the park, we can get funding for a permanent ashtray receptacle at this location. Krissi has been teaching for 10 years and loves interacting with her students. She's been busy this year creating a blended teaching model for the current hybrid schedule. Today is National Energy Efficiency Day and we are Today is National Energy Efficiency Day and we are celebrating by highlighting a Project ReCharge student-driven project. The robotics team, DIRT, at Dayton Intermediate School, submitted a proposal to replace their school's 25-watt fluorescent tube lighting with 15 watt LED tubes. This change will save the school close to $9,000 a year in energy savings while offsetting over 128,000 lbs of CO2. "This real-world learning provides valuable workforce development as students learn how to solve energy and sustainability problems in their homes, school, and community," said their teacher Dusti Houk. Dayton Intermediate will not have to invest any money for the retrofit thanks to our partnerships with NV Energy and their "Smart Schools" program and a grant provided by Tesla and it's K-12 Nevada Education Gift fund. A previous student lighting retrofit at Pyramid Lake Jr/Sr High School was the source of the Smart Schools rebate that will be utilized. "Once the lighting project at Dayton is completed, the rebate will be used to fund the next student project," explained Vanessa Robertson, Co-Executive director of Envirolution. Congratulations to Ms. Adrienne Wiggins, a new Pro Congratulations to Ms. Adrienne Wiggins, a new Project ReCharge Teacher, that was just awarded $2,000 as part of the Voya, Inc. 2020 Unsung Heroes award competition! This award is given nationwide to educators to honor their innovative teaching, creative projects, and ability to influence the children they teach. Adrienne is increasing her students language development and content knowledge in STEM with her "STEM and Language Development" program. The money will be used to purchase supplies for the school and students for continued engagement.
