What is Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day?

The 2022 year marks the 5th year of Envirolution’s national Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day event on Thursday, February 24th. This is a time to show middle schools girls, genderqueer, or non-binary students how engineers can change the world. Through engineering activities and engagement with professional role models, this day aims to inspire, encourage and empower students. This year, Envirolution is excited to partner with Tesla and the University of Nevada, Reno (College of Engineering, and Society for Women Engineers) to bring two different events to middle school students throughout the country.

Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) is part of a national event dedicated to inspiring and encouraging middle school girls and those who identify as genderqueer, and non-binary, to consider a career in engineering. Envirolution, a Reno-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, partnered with Tesla for over four years to introduce middle school students to the innovative tech company and learn about Tesla’s missions and vision. On February 26th, 2022, participants will receive a virtual behind-the-scenes tour of the Tesla facilities, engage in an optional engineering-related hands-on activities, and learn about a variety of engineering careers along with the inspiring women behind them. Be a part of this national event by purchasing your own IGED “Engineer Like A Girl” T-Shirt Today!

Recap 2021

We went virtual!

During our fourth year of partnership, Envirolution and Tesla brought this virtual event to over 1,000 students across the nation from 140 schools and 39 school districts complete with factory tours and interactive videos. All participants got an exclusive look inside the innovative tech company, showcasing the variety of engineering careers and the inspiring women behind them. The day concluded with Envirolution leading a hands-on activity highlighting the basics of the electric motor and the essential engineering design process.  The testimonials and the pre/post surveys from students show that they logged off with a sense of empowerment and awareness of the opportunities available to them. On February 25th, each student received a kit complete with all of the necessary materials needed to engage in this event as well as a commemorative T-shirt.

Recap 2020

For 2020, we worked with 11 Tesla locations across 5 states, with over 400 girls and 180 Tesla volunteers. At Gigafactory NV, 80 students received a behind-the-scenes tour, participated in a series of STEM activities, heard from U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, and had lunch with Tesla team members to learn about careers in STEM.

Recap 2019

On Thursday, February 21st, 2019, Tesla and Envirolution partnered for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. The event — which took place at seven different sites across the west coast — was hosted at Gigafactory 1 here in Reno, Nevada, and saw more than 50 girls from Sparks and Dilworth Middle Schools participate. In addition to tours of the facility itself, the girls had the opportunity to explore STEM in three hands-on activities that Envirolution played a significant role in developing. The event was a resounding success (if we do say so ourselves!) and on this page, we’ve collected all of the associated press coverage that our organizations received.
